"Azerbaijan: Thirty Days of Shame" Summary — Day 27 through Day 30 The Corrupt Aliyev Regime

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Editor’s Note: On February 22, 2013, the Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC) launched “Azerbaijan: Thirty Days of Shame”, a campaign aimed at informing and educating Canadians about Azerbaijan’s flagrant and consistent abuses of human rights. On each day during the thirty days, the ANCC will post one article, video, or human rights report highlighting Azerbaijan’s continuing dis- respect for human rights and its ruling regime’s efforts to gloss over its gross violations with slick pro- paganda, political bullying, and misinformation.

Montreal — Dictatorial president lham Aliyev, his family, and his ruling regime continue their corrupt ways as they bleed Azerbaijan and its people of the country’s wealth. While Azerbaijan’s ruling elite continue to line their pockets, many in Azerbaijan continue to live in squalor. The President of Azerbaijan has been compared to a mafia crime boss in US diplomatic cables. The Aliyev family has been systematically grabbing shares of the most profitable businesses in the country. His family had taken large shares in lucrative industries including the telecom, minerals and construction industries often through government related deals. Azerbaijan and President Aliyev continue to “top” worldwide corruption lists.

Azerbaijan continues to deny its citizens basic human rights and political freedoms, continues to incite ethnic hatred against its neighbours, continues its belligerent rhetoric and warmongering, and continues to spend millions on its hyperactive propaganda machine. It becomes clear that Aliyev and his elite entourage are not motivated by the well-being of Azerbaijan, but rather by the theft of Azerbaijan’s wealth at the expense of the region’s human rights and peace.

Here is a summary of the articles, video, and human rights reports from Day 27 through Day 30:

Day 27: Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project – OCCRP names Aliyev “Person of the Year”
