CAMBRIDGE, ON – Friday January 11, 2013 – The Armenian National Committee of Southwestern Ontario (ANC-SWO) hosted an Armenian Christmas and New Years wine and cheese event for community leaders as an appreciation for a successful 2012, and their support for Armenian affairs. Notable attendees to the event included MP for Kitchener-Conestoga, and Chairman of the Canada-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group, Harold Albrecht. MP for Kitchener-Centre Stephen Woodworth, MP for Kitchener-Waterloo Peter Braid, MPP for Kitchener-Conestoga Michael Harris, MPP for Cambridge Rob Leone, MPP for Guelph Liz Sandals, City of Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig, City of Cambridge Councillors Nicholas Ermeta, and Ben Tucci.
The event was well represented from members of the southwestern Ontario Armenian community. Very Reverend Father Keghart Kosbakian, Very Reverend Father Hovhannes Sarmazian, Central Executive ANCC members Joe Poladian and Vrej Kassamanian, and President of the Armenian Community Centre of Cambridge Tro Taslakian.
The event commenced with an introductory message from the ANC-SWO chapter Chairman JP Assadourian. Mr. Assadourian thanked all the members present for all their hard work, and talked about future objectives in 2013 and what the ANCC would like to see accomplished leading up to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Second, MP Harold Albrecht updated the group on the work of the Friendship Group and his close working relations with the Armenian Embassy in Ottawa. Notably, Mr. Albrecht has been pushing for increase in aid for the minority Armenians who have lost their homes in Syria. Lastly, Reverend Father Keghart educated the group on Armenian Christmas and the importance of the pomegranate in Armenian history.
