Roupen Kouyoumdjian

Roupen Kouyoumdjian was a dedicated leader, a principled advocate, and a beloved figure in the Armenian-Canadian community whose lifelong work left a profound and lasting impact. As a former Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC), he was a central figure in advancing the Armenian Cause and defending the rights and interests of Armenians both in Canada and internationally.
Born in Turkey, Roupen, a descendant of genocide surviving parents, experienced first-hand the effects of state-sponsored discrimination and oppression against Armenians. Those early experiences instilled in him a deep sense of duty to seek justice and to ensure that the crimes of the past would never be forgotten nor repeated. His unwavering commitment guided every step of his work in the community and on Parliament Hill.
During his tenure with the ANCC, Roupen played a key role in Canada’s historic recognition of the Armenian Genocide, achieved through three significant milestones: in the Senate in 2002, the House of Commons in 2004, and finally, by the Government of Canada in 2006. His efforts also led to the adoption of Motion 587 in 2015, establishing April as Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation, and Prevention Month in Canada—a powerful legacy of remembrance and action, on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
Beyond his political and advocacy accomplishments, Roupen was equally devoted to grassroots community work. He was a tireless volunteer who mentored generations of young Armenian-Canadians, instilling in them a strong sense of cultural identity, civic responsibility, and community service. He deeply believed in the importance of education, youth engagement, and building a strong and united community. His encouragement and guidance inspired many to take up leadership and advocacy roles.
Roupen was known for his humility, moral clarity, and quiet, steadfast determination. His strength lay in his ability to work diligently and effectively behind the scenes, motivated by his belief in truth, justice, and the eventual triumph of good over evil.
To honour his extraordinary contributions and preserve the legacy he left behind, the ANCC Roupen Kouyoumdjian Scholarship was established. This scholarship supports and encourages young Armenian-Canadians who embody the values Roupen championed throughout his life: integrity, service, and commitment to community.
Roupen Kouyoumdjian remains an enduring inspiration. His life’s work continues to guide the Armenian-Canadian community as it continues to pursue justice, unity, and the advancement of the Armenian cause.
