On April 24, 2015, the House of Commons passed Motion M587 with all party support. Motion M587 recalls that Canada has officially recognized four genocides (the Holocaust, the Holodomor, the Rwandan Tutsi Genocide and the Armenian Genocide) and that three of these genocides have a memorial day in April, so it is appropriate to designate April of each year as Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation and Prevention Month.
ANCC has reached out to elected officials and various government departments to work with them in making sure that all Canadians are aware of the designation of April as Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation and Prevention month. ANCC is also asking all media organizations to spread the message and report on events in their communities marking April as Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation and Prevention Month. This year, the ANCC will join with the Rwandan community (April 7th), the Armenian community (April 24th), the Jewish community (May 4th) and the Ukrainian community (November 26th) to commemorate the genocides that they suffered.
